How To Reach Andaman/Port Blair By Air
Till 2005 the only way to reach Port Blair was through the Sea. In 2005, the Veer Savarkar International Airport (IXZ) was established and regular flight services were initiated.
You can take direct flight from Chennai and Kolkata. There are more than one direct flight on a daily basis from these two metropolitans of mainland India. Otherwise, you can take connecting flight from any part of the India. Even from cities such as Bengaluru(BLR), Hyderabad(HYD), Vishakhapatnam (VTZ) and Delhi (DEL) direct flights are available but once or twice in a week.
On arrival at the airport, which is about 2 kilometers from the main city, you can hire a taxi or an auto-rickshaw to travel within the Port Blair city.
Taxis are available in Port Blair. Most of them are old cars but well maintained and better to travel in than auto-rickshaws. Fares depend on the distance travelled, however, an average trip around Port Blair can cost about INR 500.
Auto-rickshaws are available in Port-Blair but not the most comfortable way to travel within the city.
How To Reach Andaman/Port Blair By Sea
For the adventurous and the tolerant, you can take a passenger ship that heads out to Port Blair from Chennai (60 hours), Kolkata (66 hours), and Visakhapatnam (56 hours). There are five ships that take trips to Port Blair from the coasts of Chennai, Visakhapatnam and Kolkata. Since online services are not up yet, you have to book your tickets from the designated offices.
Tickets range from Rs 2000/- to Rs 10,000/- per person depending on the cabin you book. You can select from bunker cabins, Second, First, Deluxe. The difference between all the cabins is majorly in the number of people they can accommodate.
The voyage to Port Blair takes up to 3 days/FIFTY HOURS on good days when the tide is in favor of the journey, but it will be wise to be prepared for at least 4 days of living in the midst of the sea. Preparation generally includes food, medicines that help with sea sickness, and your own forms of entertainment.
Permits for foreign nationals travelling by ship can be obtained earlier on from Foreign Registration Offices located at the city of departure.
